Wheel Bearing and some LSD.

10/28/10

What started as a rear disc brake upgrade culminated a year and a half later as an axle/flange replacement. TORQUE THOSE JEZUS NUTS BOYS AND GIRLS!!

..and if course, at 35 years old, it didn't want to budge.

So it took the inside bearing with it, just to be a dick.
Which led to pulling the other side. And it too took the bearing.

Which led to a full bearing replacement

Box o goodies via Bluntech.  Overnighted cause Steve's really swell.

Which led to me learning the inner workings of the rear bearing sets..

And the discovery of the fat shims I don.

And their relationship to the sleeve and bearings. (The shims are for the outer race/machining inside the swing arm, to bring them to a 64mm spacing spec..  NOT the tube spacer.  It was already 64mm.. )

Which turned out well..

..until I remembered I had converted to rear disc. And therefore the hubs needed cut down. Which led to hours of grinding..on the new thick Tii hubs... With the car in fourth at 3K to keep it cool...

..And on it went till sundown..

Which leads more grinding, and to the silver lining..a diff swap to the LSD .. What the heck right?!  It's only been sitting around for a year!

More later..there's hub grindageness to do yet.

Ok. Ended up getting the other turned for 20 bucks.
The thickness difference is obvious here, between the Tii and 2002 flanges..

Here's the hand turned side completed...

And out with the open diff and in with the 320i 390 LSD.

Back on the ground after waaaay to many days on stands in a parking lot 40 minutes from home!

The test drive to return rented tools and pick up Bruno from doggie day care went smooth. And the drive home went fine as well!  Shhheeeeewwww!!

Many thanks to my friend Matt for his patience and help while my car was in his parking lot for five days.. I owe him one. Or five.
